Waiting three weeks and ghosting half the list? That’s when reputational damage kicks in. Put hiring on the calendar like you would any client work.

Use simple comms to buy time

A quick automated reply, a follow-up with a timeline, even a “we haven’t forgotten you” message helps.
Kia ora, savvy employers! Let’s chat about something that’s probably been on your mind lately – nabbing those A+ players for your team before the year wraps up. If you’re aiming to kick off January with fresh talent, we’ve got the inside track on why you need to start your hiring engines in October and November. Buckle up, because we’re about to give you the lowdown on getting ahead in the end of year recruitment game.

Navigating the summer slowdown

We all know the score – from mid-December until early January, the corporate world goes into a bit of a hibernation mode. Beaches packed, offices empty. It’s what makes our work-life balance great, but it sure complicates things if you’re planning your hiring strategy. That’s why October and November aren’t just another couple of months in the calendar — they’re your golden ticket to staffing success.

Think of October and November as your recruitment sweet spot. You’ve got just enough time to meet, greet and seal the deal before everyone shuts up shop. Plus, with many candidates needing to give four weeks’ notice, an October or November hire means they can wrap things up nicely with their old job and start fresh with you in January.

But it’s not just about timing. This period gives you a chance to be an onboarding overachiever. Use the quieter summer weeks to put the final touches on your induction plan for a seamless introduction to your business. And let’s not forget the ultimate power move – while your competitors are still getting back into the swing of things, you’ll have already secured the best talent.

Why wait?

Putting off your talent hunt until the New Year is a risky game. By then, the top talent will be snapped up, leaving you scrambling to fill positions in a hurry – and let’s face it, rushed hiring rarely ends well.

Plus, by the time your new hire starts, you’ll be planning for upcoming holidays and navigating short weeks. It’s probably also a good idea to be a step ahead of the “New Year, New Me” resignations, to have some solid team members in place as you work towards your end of financial year!

Nail your hiring game: The October-November playbook

So, ready to win the talent game? Here’s your gameplan:

Identify your must-have roles and go after them.

Keep your process thorough but remember – momentum is key.

Recruiters are your best friend – they’re perfect for coordinating your diary and ensuring you’re only meeting the best candidates during the busy season.

Be upfront about your timeline. We all appreciate straight talk.

Beyond the rush: Keeping your talent pipeline flowing year-round

While October and November are your MVPs for New Year hires, staying on top of your talent game is a year-round sport. Build relationships even when you’re not hiring – you never know when you’ll need to call in a favour. Show up at industry events and carve out your place in the market.

Spring into action: your call to recruitment

Remember, in the world of recruitment, the early bird doesn’t just get the worm – it gets the entire garden. Ready to tap into the hidden talent goldmine? That’s where we come in.

At HOME Recruitment, we’re not just connectors; we’re your personal talent matchmakers with an exclusive line to the crème de la crème of candidates. Our global network? It’s your backstage pass to an elite pool of talent. We’re talking top-shelf professionals who are vetted, validated and ready to take your business to the next level.

Why spend valuable time sifting through countless CVs when you could have a curated selection of top candidates? At HOME Recruitment, we’re here to streamline your hiring process and connect you with exceptional talent.

Get in touch with us today to discuss your hiring needs and how we can support your recruitment strategy. With the right approach, you can start the New Year with a team that’s ready to drive your business forward.

These folks have new perspectives on age-old Kiwi challenges and the uncanny ability to apply international best practices to local markets. It’s like having a Swiss Army knife of business acumen – versatile, sharp and always handy, whether you’re tackling a local project or considering future expansion.

Skills that make your competition sweat

Overseas, our Kiwis haven’t just been collecting fridge magnets. They’ve been mastering cutting-edge techniques, leading diverse teams and developing problem-solving skills that would make MacGyver jealous. Whether it’s implementing the latest customer service trends they’ve seen abroad or bringing innovative management styles to your Kiwi workplace, these aren’t just skills; they’re superpowers waiting to be unleashed in your business.

Cultural intelligence that’s off the charts

In our increasingly diverse society, cultural smarts are currency. Returning Kiwis are walking, talking cultural chameleons who can seamlessly switch between boardroom banter and client schmoozing in multiple contexts. They bring diversity of thought that sparks innovation faster than you can say “flat white.” Need someone to navigate negotiations with diverse local communities or help your team better serve a varied customer base? These folks do it with the finesse of a diplomat (but are way more fun at office parties).

Hit the ground running? More like sprinting!

While your average new hire might still be finding their feet, returning Kiwis are already tapped into local networks and industry goss. They’re fluent in Kiwi business lingo and unwritten rules, ready to contribute from day dot, no “readjustment period” needed. It’s like hiring a local with a turbo boost – they understand the Kiwi context but bring fresh energy and ideas to shake things up.

Grit and adaptability in spades

Living abroad isn’t all Instagram-worthy brunches. It takes guts, resilience and a can-do attitude. Returning Kiwis bring a work ethic forged in the fires of starting from scratch in a foreign land. Their adaptability would make a shape-shifter look inflexible. And let’s talk about those problem-solving skills – honed by figuring out foreign tax systems. If they can do that, they can tackle any challenge your local business throws at them.

A black book that’s pure gold

That network they’ve built? It’s not just for sharing travel pics. We’re talking connections that span industries and experiences. These folks have the inside track on diverse business practices and emerging trends. They bring potential collaborations and innovative ideas that could revolutionise how you do business, even if you’re focused solely on the Kiwi market. It’s like having a business class ticket to a world of knowledge, right in your office.

Loyalty you can bank on

Many returning Kiwis aren’t just looking for a job; they’re looking for their new work whānau. This often means a commitment to your company that goes beyond the 9 to 5. They’ve got a desire to put down roots and grow with your organisation, paired with a passion for contributing to New Zealand’s success story. When you hire a returning Kiwi, you’re not just getting an employee, you’re gaining a stakeholder in your company’s future.

An energy boost better than your morning coffee

There’s something about coming home that lights a fire in the belly. Returning Kiwis bring enthusiasm that’s downright contagious. They’re bursting with fresh ideas that can shake up stale processes and have a hunger to make their mark on home turf. It’s like plugging your team into a power source of innovation and drive, energising your local business operations.

Let’s bring it HOME

At HOME Recruitment, we’re not just filling roles; we’re bringing a world of experience to your doorstep, one returning Kiwi at a time. These folks aren’t just employees; they’re your ticket to elevating your business right here in Aotearoa.

Ready to inject some fresh mojo into your team? Give us a shout. We’ve got a talent pool deeper than the Hauraki Gulf, and we’re itching to make some magic happen for your business. Let’s welcome home your next superstar. After all, there’s no place like home – especially when home is where the opportunity is.

As the global pandemic is still very much out there in the world, here in New Zealand, we have managed to do pretty well. With the Guardian UK saying “New Zealand’s Covid-19 response the best in the world” why do we still stress about what the headlines might say next in New Zealand.

Have you found yourself in the 4% of unemployed people across New Zealand? Unfortunately, COVID-19 has been the cause of many job losses and closing of companies during the tougher months earlier this year. Thankfully as we move towards normality, industries are working out their finances and companies are starting to rehire. This is a great time to partner with us at HOME as we will have the inside knowledge on which industries are hiring.

If you are lucky and your position hasn’t been affected but maybe you haven’t got the promotion or bonus you were promised this year – it’s not because of you! Staying put and being grateful for the job you are still in is definitely the biggest win of 2020 and you should be proud.

If you are amongst the many applying for all the jobs on the New Zealand job boards, maybe you need to rethink your path. Applying for a role that’s a similar level might give you a better chance of securing an interview – then you can grow within the company. You can’t be too fussy at a time like this!

If you want to be in the know of what’s going on in the job market or are looking for a job, email apply@homerecruitment.co.nz or give us a call.

Redundancy – not exactly a positive topic but a common one due to the current jobs in New Zealand climate. Often a taboo subject that most of us don’t want to believe we would ever have to experience but it doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom! At HOME we have discussed the positives and how to keep moving if we find ourselves there.

Networking

Using this time to research into different conferences and events that might be relevant for the next chapter in your career. Firstly, networking with or without a job is always beneficial for your career as you never know who you might meet or learn from. Networking events are great for meeting likeminded people who may be in the same boat as you, making new friends or you may come across your next employer! Finding jobs in New Zealand can often come about through word of mouth.

Study

Maybe you have been putting off studying something new that has always interested you over the past few years as work has got in the way. Studying could always contribute towards a career change which might help you get your foot in the door for something new. Keeping the brain working and yourself productive will definitely help get through the quieter life you might find yourself in.

Recruitment Agencies

Doing your research into agencies, looking at the types of roles/industries they work on and finding the best match. With them you can perfect your CV and talk through interview tips whilst they help you find your next position. Agencies will have access to roles that aren’t necessarily advertised on your usual job boards as they have such great relationships with their clients so a great way to make connections with your ideal company!

Freelancing

Maybe you can freelance through your trade or you have a side hustle that you can start to make some more money from?! Recruitment Agencies are also great to help you find temporary/contract work in the interim. People tend to shy away from temporary work due to longevity but more often than not, temporary work will become permeant.

Take a break

This is one of the best times to be able to take a career break. Spend time with friends and family, maybe do some domestic travelling (or international depending on COVID!) and just generally doing something for YOU! Going through a redundancy can be tough, you deserve to take a break and do things that make you happy – your mental health will thank you later!

If you have found yourself in a similar position, please email apply@homerecruitment.co.nz. Let’s book in a call or coffee, go over your CV and work out your next steps!

Don’t know where to start or who to register with? Don’t worry– we have put together a few helpful tips to help get you started;

1. Do Your Research

Might sound simple, but it is important you research different recruitment agencies to identify which one will be best to help support you in your job search. Recruitment agencies often specialise in the types of roles they recruit and industries they work in, so it is imperative you are working with one that can speak to you about jobs you are actually interested in exploring!

Don’t be afraid to register with a couple of agencies too – every agency will be working with diverse clients so it is a nice way to be introduced to different companies or organisations.

2. Find A Recruitment Consultant You Connect With

Finding a new job can be a full-time job in itself and at times a little overwhelming – so it is key to partner with a recruitment agency or consultant you connect with. A good consultant will want to understand your key motivators and what drives you professionally and personally – to help determine your long-term career goals.

Most importantly, a good recruitment consultant will listen. There is nothing worse than spending an hour with someone, for them to call you about a role that is irrelevant to what you had spoken about!

3. Ask Your Friends

Reach out to your friends who have done the move like you, now you’re back in New Zealand ask what recruitment agencies they have had most success with or connected with. If they can share some positive and or negative experiences – this will help you in finding the best one for you.

Chances are – someone will know someone who can steer you in the right direction, welcome back to New Zealand!

Nevertheless, if you have just arrived back to New Zealand following time overseas please do reach out to HOME Recruitment. We will listen, understand and support you in the next big step in your career – we have all done it too!

To get in touch, please contact us at HelloNZ@homerecruitment.co.nz or call +64 930 9433.

It’s been a while since you were in the New Zealand job market (where’d the time go overseas right?!) and you’ll need some help with translating your experience whether it be coming back to Auckland, another major NZ city, or returning to the regions. Your contacts have moved, industries and companies have changed and where do you even start with a good recruiter?

You need someone who understands where you’ve been and where you’re going – that’s us, HOME Recruitment. We’ll help you build a CV reflective of your experience, while also making relevant to the New Zealand employment market. We’ve walked in your shoes and know exactly how to help you re-enter the New Zealand job market in a professional sense.

CV Tip 1 – Do your research

Starting is the hardest part and being a Kiwi returning home to New Zealand can be daunting and a market such as Auckland, can be very different from what you left especially post pandemic! Do your research and reach out to HOME on or call us on +64 9 930 9433 to partner you with a relevant industry consultant where we can help you to best position your CV for the roles you’re seeking and provide insights into the market by way of key employers, salaries and varied ways of working.

Tip 2 – Keep it simple

It is important to be clear, succinct and focused on your key responsibilities and main projects. Be deliberate with your examples and try to be as specific as possible! Use numbers, dates and client names to provide more context on your experience.

Personalising your CV to each role will ensure you only include information that is relevant to the role you are applying for – examine the job description and make sure everything on there (that you have done) is on your CV clearly.

CV Tip 3 – Language

Keep your language professional and try to not personalise your responsibilities e.g. “Responsible for managing end to end event coordination” not “I coordinated events.”

Try to avoid one-word bullet points like “organised” instead provide an example of where you’ve used or how you’ve developed this attribute; “Responsible for delivery of marketing activations on a weekly cycle requiring creative input alongside a high level of organisation and attention to detail”.

Tip 4 – Formatting and Layout

Keep your CV to two pages as much as possible and always include; dates (months and years!) of employment, company name/location, job title. A small description of what the company does can be useful, especially if a company is not known in New Zealand. Continuing to keep clear bullet point to highlight your day to day duties and key projects that are most relevant.

In order to stand out from the crowd, its important the layout is clear and easy to read!

Keep the formatting basic and focus on getting on the information in, rather than making it creative. All industries are different, but an easy read will be the best way to get yourselves in front of the client.

CV Tip 5 – Zero Gaps Policy!

Making sure there aren’t gaps in your CV is imperative, the client always wants to know what you’re doing – even when you’re travelling or relocating. Having work experience overseas definitely works in your favour. Booking travel, applying for visas and moving countries shows great initiative!

CV Tip 6 – Proof Read

Check, check and check again then get someone else to check again! There is nothing worse than a CV with grammatical errors and once you have been staring at a screen for a long time, everything starts to merge into one! Attention to detail can be a serious deal breaker.

CV Tip 7 – Quality Over Quantity

Be targeted to where you are sending your CV. Be careful not to scatter gun in a smaller marketplace such as New Zealand!

CV Tip 8 –Social media, it’s infiltrated your job search too!

Social media can be easily checked by employers, always be aware of the amount of privacy that is set on your accounts or if you want to be public, don’t post photos you wouldn’t want your mum to see!

LinkedIn on the other hand, is a great tool for job searching and showing off your experience for anyone to see – keep this up to date and relevant more than ever.

CV Tip 9 – Your CV is the start of an exciting journey

Be consistent with your tone and language, this includes any email or phone communications, your LinkedIn, cover letter and CV. Job hunting can be a laborious task but an important one to prioritise and get right!

CV Tip 10 – Live Document

Your CV will be constantly evolving and its important to take everyone’s opinion with a grain of salt. Ultimately you must be comfortable with the way it represents you.

Now go and put that perfect CV together and send it through to apply@homerecruitment.co.nz or call +64 9 930 9433 to start the journey towards the job of your dreams.
